What to know before shipping your car abroad

At PMR we have shipped thousands of cars to and from Cyprus. From countries including the UK, all of Europe and worldwide.

Now in this blog we detail what you should know before you decide to ship your car abroad.

Shipping your car TO Cyprus

There are two options for car shipments into Cyprus:

  1. Importing your car in a container

When importing your car in a container, your car can be filled safely with your belongings. This can be a cost-effective way of shipping your goods at the same time.

With this option, you can opt to have your car collected from your door, rather than having to drop it off at the depot yourself.

  1. Roll On Roll Off

When using the ‘Roll On Roll Off’ method, your car must be empty and it must be delivered by yourself to the port in the UK and collected from the port in Cyprus.

Shipping your car FROM Cyprus

Similarly to the above, there are two options for car shipments out of Cyprus:

  1. Exporting a car in PMR’s weekly shared container

With this option, your car can be filled safely with belongings. You need to provide your shipping supplier an inventory of the goods you have loaded into the car.

PMR offers door-to-door service, or if you prefer, you can collect your car from the UK depot on the other end of its journey.

  1. Roll on Roll Off

When using the ‘Roll On Roll Off’ method, your car must be empty and it must be delivered by yourself to the port in Cyprus and collected from the port in the UK.

Prior to the shipment of your car, your PMR contact would attend your closest customs office with you to register it. You would need to bring along:

  • The car logbook
  • Your passport
  • An up-to-date tax disc

Getting an accurate quote

In order to provide you with a quote for importing or exporting your car we need to know:

  • The make and model of the car
  • If applicable, where the car is to be collected from (with postcode)

All quotes provided by PMR are valid for 30 days and include all port charges.

Preparing to ship your car

Depending on which option you are going for, make sure that any belongings stored in the car are safely and securely packed, with the driver’s seat clear.

Make sure that your car is empty of fuel before shipping.

If you are opting for the ‘Roll On Roll Off’ option, you will need to provide your logistics supplier with your V5 document in order to receive a booking confirmation. This booking confirmation is then required at the port when delivering your car.

We require scanned copies of your passport and V5 prior to the collection of the car.

Your contact at PMR will remind you of all of the requirements prior to shipping, depending on which shipping method you have opted for.

Collecting your car upon arrival in Cyprus

When it comes to the ‘Roll on Roll Off’ option, upon the arrival of your vehicle in Cyprus, you have approximately 10 days to register your car. In order to do this, you need to attend your nearest customs office with your V5 document and passport to sign an authorization.

The registration charges are:

  • Cyprus Log Book
  • MOT
  • Number Plates
  • Road Tax

PMR offers a car full registration service to ease the stress of this admin.

Again, when shipping your car to Cyprus, you will need to be in the country when the car arrives. Furthermore, you will need to have all of the following original documents in your name, for customs:

  • V5 Document
  • Passport
  • Driving license

It is important to remember that you will be responsible for any duties upon arrival of your car in Cyprus, and this is not included in the price of the quote.

We hope that this provides you with all of the information you need to understand what the process of shipping your car in and out of Cyprus looks like.
