10 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT HOUSE MOVE IN CYPRUS
Best Removals Cyprus – Moving house in Cyprus or to Cyprus does not need to be a stressful experience. Planning ahead is key! In this article by Cyprus in Style Magazine, we offer house moving advice and detail the benefits of planning your house move well in advance. A smooth and hassle-free move can be achieved by avoiding the pitfalls that we personally encountered on our recent move.
As someone who has moved home in Cyprus multiple times over the years, I thought I knew all the rules and even considered myself somewhat of an expert! However, under pressure and in the heat of the summer, all the rules went out the window and, during our move, we made a lot of minor mistakes which could have been avoided. Thank goodness for the support from our selected leading removal company! Follow these guidelines and benefit from our experience.
AVOID AUGUST FOR MOVING HOUSE IN CYPRUS
The best advice we can give to anyone living in Cyprus is if you are thinking of moving house in August, just don’t. It is the worst month of the year to be physically working away in the high temperatures and, if you can, avoid this month at all costs. We had no option as the new buyer wanted to be in within two weeks, so this was a fast and unexpected move.
BOOK YOUR CYPRUS REMOVAL COMPANY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Rather embarrassingly, we have used our removal company too many times over the years here in Cyprus. We have used them for four domestic moves and an international move back to the UK when we went back to London for a short sabbatical. We always book Peter Morton Removals in Cyprus. Their quote is valid for a full year and their service is outstanding! When we returned to Cyprus, we were unable to use them as they were fully booked. Our advice would be that, as soon as you know you are going to be moving house and want to book a quality removal company in Cyprus, make that call and schedule a house removal survey as soon as possible.
START DECLUTTERING EARLY – SELL OR DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS
As mentioned before, we only had two weeks’ notice for our move which I will use as an excuse throughout this article! If you know you are moving, it is best to start straight away on getting rid of items you no longer need. Start decluttering early and decide on whether you want to sell or donate your items. If you want to sell your unwanted items, there are plenty of active Facebook groups to list them with such as Buy and Sell Cyprus, but do start early as this can take a lot longer than you think by the time they are collected. The other alternative to selling your items is to donate to local charity shops such as St Michaels Hospice or RnR Auction and Charity Shop – Rescue & Rehome. We have many wonderful charities here in Cyprus, and it is great for them to benefit from your unwanted bits. You can take your items to the charity shops, or, if you have clothes, there are several large charity bins by the road ready to receive your cast-offs. This all takes time, so do not leave it to the last minute or rush yourself with your decision as to whether to keep, sell or donate.
DESIGNATE A PACKING AREA IN YOUR HOUSE
Before you start packing your belongings to move house, we advise you to designate a packing area in your house that contains all your boxes, packing paper, tape and pen for labelling the boxes. Always allocate space for the heaviest items to be placed in the boxes first and collect plenty of cushions and towels to be used as padding and protection for the more fragile items. Do not forget to label every box to avoid confusion when you reach your new property in Cyprus.
START PACKING EARLY & PACK UNUSED AREAS FIRST
Your selected removal company in Cyprus should know roughly how many boxes you require from the House Moving Survey carried out at the start. We were lucky to receive an enormous supply of brand-new branded boxes from Peter Morton Removals and book boxes to transport our large quantity of books. Make sure to get your boxes as early as possible to start packing non-essential items. We recommend packing any guest rooms first, unused kitchen cupboards, Christmas decorations, winter clothes and anything else you don’t need access to until you reach your new home. Alternatively, Peter Morton Removals offers a full packing service.
HOUSE MOVE PACKING DO’s & DON’Ts
Some items are at risk of being ruined or lost during your house move. I have a funny thing about not packing lamps and, in particular, lampshades, so I always leave these out. You can take them in your own car to prevent damage, but with our selected Cyprus removal company, they had a specific section of the lorry where they were transported perfectly. The same goes for hanging clothes; we were even provided with many high-quality wardrobe boxes ready for unpacking into their new wardrobes at the other end. Another important lesson we happened to neglect this time around was to keep screws and leads with the original items! When you dismantle any furniture or electrical appliances, always put the nuts and screws in an individual freezer bag and tape the bag to that item. This will save loads of time looking for them at the other end.
ORGANISE AN ESSENTIALS BOX & OVERNIGHT BAG
This is something we have always done in the past, but on this occasion, I completely forgot. Your box should contain items such as phone and laptop chargers, medication, kettle, tea/coffee, etc. Another thing to include here is essential spectacles which you do not want to be without. On this last move, I left my full makeup bag out which was promptly packed by accident by my husband. My fault entirely for leaving it out. It should have been in the essentials box! The night before your move, also make the time to pack an overnight bag containing everything you need to get a good night’s sleep at your new destination. This should include pyjamas, bed linen, towels and a washbag so you can enjoy a good shower. Make sure that instead of sending this in the lorry, pack it in your car, so that it is not lost at the other end. There is nothing more frustrating than digging through boxes trying to find a toothbrush!
BOOK A PROFESSIONAL HOUSE CLEANING COMPANY
Booking a professional cleaner for the day you move house in Cyprus is something I would also highly recommend! There is nothing worse than leaving a dusty house for the new owners and also unpacking in a dirty house and having to clean up the mess left by the previous owners. I do not usually hire a cleaning company, but for this move, they saved the day by coming in and cleaning with us. This meant we could leave our old villa pristine for the new owner. We also used them to clean through the villa we were moving into. Sadly, most people will not clean, so jump the gun and get a cleaner to do it for you. With all the other work of the day, you will not regret it. If there is one day to hire a professional cleaner, it is on your moving day!
DRINKS & SNACKS FOR THE DAY YOU MOVE HOUSE IN CYPRUS
Do not underestimate how busy and tired you will be on the day you move house in Cyprus, especially if you move house in August as we did. One of the most important things to remember is to finish everything before the big day because once the house removal men arrive, they are off! There is literally no extra time afforded on moving day. It is so important to have a selection of drinks and snacks to keep you going – and for your removal men too. You want to be able to offer them a drink and snack as they work so hard to get you to where you need to be. Obviously, water needs to be freely available for everyone during the summer months.
CHOOSE ONE OF THE BEST REMOVAL COMPANIES IN CYPRUS
If we were to recommend what we consider to be the best removal company in Cyprus, we highly recommend the leading removal firm Peter Morton Removals. Their headquarters is situated just off the highway as you enter Paphos and includes a specially-designed storage facility. They are the best removal company in Cyprus for international, domestic and corporate moves. They also offer a full car shipping service and specialised fine art and high-value shipping department. As Peter Morton explained, “Customer satisfaction has been paramount to the success of our business over the last thirteen years as most of our new customers are through personal recommendations”.
